2020 Fantasy Hell
Chris Robin https://twitter.com/DetroitBeastie
Fantasy football is many things! It’s fun! It’s joyful! It’s frustrating! It angers you! Yet we keep coming back. Why do you think that is? It’s challenging and it brings people together. That’s why!
We’ve all read rankings, projections, scouting reports, busts, sell, buy and breakout articles. What about fantasy heaven? Or fantasy hell? Have we ever taken an honest look at our teams and thought, “this guy is just hell to own!’. What about the times you’ve been head over heels in love with you team and said, “owning this guy is pure joy, its like heaven!”.
As we inch closer to the 2020 NFL Draft it’s time to take an honest look at our team and put together a solid draft plan! The idea of fantasy heaven and hell sounded good in my mind. It’s time to put pen to paper and explain myself.
Missed Fantasy Heaven? Here it is! https://www.dfscheatsheet.com/2020-fantasy-football-heaven/nfl/04/
Missed Fantasy Purgatory? Here it is! https://www.dfscheatsheet.com/2020-fantasy-purgatory/nfl/04/
When you picture hell what do you see? Fire and brimstone? Lava and ash? What do you see when I mention an awful fantasy player? Questionable tags? Day-to-day alerts? That big red IR icon? What ever you see is it‘s dreadful! Pure agony!
Baker Mayfield QB-Cleveland Browns
What the hell do we do with Baker? Seemingly too busy shooting commercials and giving us his opinion about Cleveland’s new jerseys, there he is. After a promising rookie season in 2018 he sort of flopped in 2019. If you remember correctly the Baker Mayfield hype train was chugging along this time last year. Did you buy? In 2019 Mayfield regressed in just about every single statistical category. In 2018 he had 3,725 passing yards and in 2019 he finished with 3,827 passing yards. So basically the only positive thing he did last season is add 102 more passing yards. Five less TD passes and seven more INT’s. It was awful. Baker Mayfield is hell to own!
Jameis Winston QB-Free Agent
Jameis had an odd 2019 season! A career year if you will! 5,109 passing yards. 33 touchdown passes. 250 rushing yards and a rushing TD. Fantastic numbers right? Oh, forgot to mention he also threw 33 interceptions! His 5,109 passing yards on 626 attempts both lead the NFL in those categories. Again, it’s an odd circumstance yet TB threw him to the curb and signed Tom Brady. So what happens with him now? He’s a suitable starting fantasy QB, if there are no negative points for INT’s! Any way you slice it he’s frustrating own. So much so Winston is in fantasy hell!
David Johnson RB-Houston Texans
The 2016 season was the best season of DJ’s career. Quite frankly, it was a phenomenal season! 293 carries for 1,239 yards and 16 TD’s. 80 receptions for 879 yards and 4 TD’s. Overall, David put up 2,118 all-purpose yards and 20 total TD’s. Since that year DJ hasn’t eclipsed 1,000 rushing or even 500 receiving yards. He’s only scored 16 total TD’s in the last three seasons combined. What happened? What’s been the problem? It’s been a mix of injuries and ineffectiveness. All I know is that it’s been hell owning him. The issue here is a mix of past potential and owners hoping he can repeat that 2016 season. I’m here to tell you it’s not going to happen. One of the worst things we can do as fantasy football players is buy into or hope a player can repeat or, “get back” to where they once were. Major red flag! David is hell to own.
Leonard Fournette RB-Jacksonville Jaguars
Leo is a fantastic running back but it’s hell owning him. He’s had three professional seasons and has gone over 1,000 rushing yards twice. On paper that’s a great thing! It’s all the DTD tags and questionable designations that are awful. He’s a prime example of damned if you do dammed if you don’t. 2019 was statistically his best season as a pro! Setting career highs in rushing yards and receptions. Is that a sign of things to come? I’m not getting my hopes up, not until he can put some legit healthy time under his belt. During the creation of this article word out of Jacksonville is that they are actively and open to traded Fournette. https://nypost.com/2020/04/18/jaguars-open-to-leonard-fournette-trade-after-cam-newton-love-fest/
Derrius Guice RB-Washington Redskins
Quick edit: Guice was arrested then fired by Washington. I hope this kid gets his life together. Sometimes life is bigger then football Guice has been very popular in my content recently, for all the wrong reasons. Instead of the same old non-sense that others say about Guice I’d like to go in a different direction. In a recent article on the Washington Redskins site, staff writer Zach Selby published an article in regards to how they plan to use Guice in 2020. Not to be rude but it’s quite optimistic. To put this bluntly, it’s a joke. Here is a link to that article. https://www.redskins.com/news/redskins-derrius-guice-christian-mccafrey-comparison
As you can see newly promoted Vice President of Player Personal Kyle Smith said, “I do believe Derrius Guice has an opportunity.” Kevin and new Redskins head coach Ron Rivera went on to compare Guice to Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffery. “He can do all those things (Guice)” Smith went on to say. That’s a very lofty goal. It’s a comparison that has no merit. Quite frankly I find it ridiculous! Guice tore his ACL and missed his entire rookie season. Last season, 2019, Derruis tore his meniscus and sprained his MCL missing a large portion of last season. On what planet is it ok to compare arguably the best overall running back to a kid who can’t stay on the field? It’s negligent and insulting. I have no interest in owning Guice. It’s just pure hell.
Tevin Coleman RB-San Francisco 49ers
The defending NFC champions just have too many capable running backs on their roster to support just one guy. It’s hell but easy to get out of. Tevin has always been a complimentary back. Never a RB1, its your decision if you want to suffer or not with Coleman. Hard pass for me! Here’s your ticket out of hell, don’t draft him!
Le’Veon Bell RB-New York Jets
From stud running back to hold out to what the hell? With three 1,200+ rushing yards seasons Bell only received 245 carries last season and failed to get over the 1,000 yard rushing mark since his rookie season (not counting 2015 shortened season due to injury). Was it the year off? Was it the Jets organization? I could argue both topics but I believe it was the expectations that got us! Expectations leads to resentments.
Sammy Watkins WR-Kansas City Chiefs
Of all the polls and questions I have ever asked on social media my fantasy hell post gained the most responses. Sammy Watkins was the #1 named player who is hell to own! Have to say I’m not surprised! In six seasons Sammy has received 1,000 yards once. He’s never caught double digit touchdowns. Has only played a full 16 game schedule once, his rookie season. At this stage of the game why are you owning him? He’s driven us crazy for six season. Constantly DTD and/or question. Why are you torturing yourself? If you didn’t know Sammy and Kansas City revised his contract saving the team $5 million in cap space. Another fantasy football player who owners cling to in hopes of some sort or resurrection. It’s painful to roster Watkins! I’ve also read numerous articles explaining why Watkins is just the highest paid decoy in football history! Think about it! As long as Mahomes, Hill and Kelce are healthy and able to run free then KC will have success.
Julian Edleman WR-New England Patriots
Julian has been a main-stay in fantasy football leagues for quite some time! Tom Brady is gone! Who is the QB in New England? This one is more of personal hell for Julian not for us as his owners.
Will Fuller V WR-Houston Texans
This is an odd circumstance, as a fantasy football fan and fantasy sports writer I know of Will Fuller. He was a fan favorite as a horribly frustrating player to own. When DeAndre Hopkins was traded to Arizona all the, “fantasy experts” came out of the woodwork to anoint Fuller the, “sneaky” and, “contrarian” wide receiver in Houston. Oh boy, lets look into Will’s production, or lack thereof, during his career so far. Will has never caught 50 passes or more in a single season. Will has yet to eclipse 700+ receiving yards in a season. He can’t stay healthy to save his soul. If you’re going to draft Will Fuller as your teams WR2, even WR3, just burn your money now. He’s hell to own.
Alshon Jeffery WR-Philadelphia Eagles
Where should I begin? In his eight professional football seasons Alshon has only played a full 16 games schedule twice. Don’t think I have time to list all the day-to-day tags and questionable designations. Jeffery is the definition of damned if you do damned if you don’t. The frustration issue here is the fact he can ball when he’s on the field. How many times has he been questionable and it’s too late to call it so you bench him and he goes for 100 yards and a TD? What about the opposite? You’ve paid attention all week to his status, get him in your lineup and he’s a last minute scratch? It’s maddening and I want no part of it! Different article, same player and same story! Owning Alshon Jeffery is fantasy hell!
T.Y. Hilton WR-Indianapolis Colts
See above! Same story, different article, same T.Y. Hilton. Owning T.Y. is fantasy hell.
Amari Cooper WR-Dallas Cowboys
I have never owned Cooper nor do I plan on it. Another odd circumstance the more I look into. In seven seasons he has four 1,000+ receiving yard seasons. During his time in Oakland he was an absolute target monster! In 2015 he was targeted 130 times! In 2016 he was targeted 132 times! Yet he has never caught 100 passes in the length of his NFL career. He has also never scored double digit TD’s in a season of his NFL career. So where’s the disconnect? Think we all know! It’s his ability to stay healthy. I find his stats to be misleading if you take a long hard look at them. How many games has he officially started but not finished? He’s too much of a hassle.
Antonio Brown WR-Free Agent
What can I say that hasn’t already been said? What’s the point of being witty or disparaging this mans character? At a certain point, which has come and gone, AB and his antics became awful. A cry for help. I don’t know what the future holds for any of us, Antonio Brown included.
Brandin Cooks WR-Houston Texas
We all know what Bill O’Brien has done in Houston. I won’t repeat any of it. For the sake of the article lets focus on Cooks. Only 25 years old, Cooks has had some very productive professional seasons! From 2015-2018 he caught 307 passes for 4,597 yards. That’s very productive! At what cost though? I’m not questioning his talent, I’m just worried about his well being. Concussions have been a real concern with Cooks and for that fact I find it hard to own him.
Eric Ebron TE-Pittsburgh Steelers
Before we get into this, just know one thing, I absolutely can’t stand Eric Ebron. Drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2014, Ebron never really developed into much. He scored 11 combined TD’s in four seasons with the Lions. Then in 2018 he broke out catching 13 total TD’s. Since then, Ebron hasn’t done a thing. He was called the human construction barrel here in Detroit. Sometimes in life and in fantasy football you just don’t like people. I wouldn’t own Ebron if you paid me! For those owners adding/drafting him in hopes of a repeated 2018 season I wish you the best. Better you than me! It’s hell owning Eric Ebron!
