Hire, fire and repeat. That’s been the normal process as a Detroit Lions head coach for quite some time now. I love the city of Detroit. I love the Detroit Lions but when does it end? How does it end?

13-29-1 is an awful way to start your head coaching career.

I take great pride in my work. I also admire those who can sit down and write a reactionary piece in a short amount of time. A lot goes into the idea! Being able to organize your thoughts in real time as you write them down is special. Letting the thought move down your arms into your hands as you type is special!

As a lifelong Detroiter and dedicated Lions fan I’ve always put off writing about the Lions. What I have in my mind and my heart would never truly be discussed to the level it deserves. I would never be able to get it all out in an effective manner. Until now.

Unless I’m wrong the Detroit Lions have always been the lovable loser. Or a trendy pick each season on a per game basis. Now, the industry just shy’s away from mentioning them. You know why? The Detroit Lions are all consuming. They eat up the joy you have. They stifle any fun you’re having. They chew you up and spit you out.

Look, I know what you’re thinking. It’s just football! Do I have to be so dramatic? Yes, absolutely yes. Nobody on earth chooses to be a Detroit Lions fan! You’re either born into it or you’re wrong. The Lions are in the fabric of every piece of this city. The Honolulu blue and silver runs through our veins. Not only is it about actual football it’s about the pride of Detroit as a city. A city that’s been beat down, made fun of and dragged though the mud. Being from the city and being a Detroit Lions fan goes hand in hand.

Yet each season the optimistic undertones of a good draft, good OTA’s and a good preseason clouds our judgment. “This is the year!” is shouted from the mountain tops! “It’s going to be different this season, I know it!” is a popular phrase. Yet every season they make a sucker out of us. To make it worse, the front office and coaching staff walk around like they don’t have a care in the world. Which only upsets the city more.

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit has long been labeled a blue collar city. Also hard working, resilient and strong! We will not bend. We will not break. We wake up every morning punch a clock and provide for our families. There is without a doubt a direct correlation between the people of Detroit and the Lions.

In any kind of relationship both side have to contribute equally. Or one side picking up the slack when the other falters. The Detroit Lions haven’t lived up to their end of the bargain. Detroit has picked them up time and time again. Detroit has shown great pride in the Lions. Detroit has made excuse after excuse for the Lions. All we want is for the Detroit Lions to live up to their end of the bargain. Show us you care. Show us you love us. Until that disconnect is vanquished it’s going to be a tough relationship.

Hire, fire and repeat. So here we are again. Another head coach fired. Another general manager fired. Where does that leave us now? I can’t speak for you but I know where I stand. I remain on the optimistic side. I remain eternal optimistic if I may say. This is the city I was born in. This is the city I grew up in. The Detroit Lions are part of my DNA. I will never waver. I will never falter.

I am now and will always be part of #OnePride.
